Heurelho Gomes believes the support of our fans will be the key factor in us getting back to winning ways against Sunderland on Saturday.
The goalkeeper has been hugely impressed by the following the team have received since he joined from PSV Eindhoven in the summer, and now he wants to give them something to cheer about against the Black Cats at The Lane.
Last weekend's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Middlesbrough on the opening day of the season told the Brazilian all he needed to know about the high standards of the Barclays Premier League, but he is confident we have what it takes to bounce back.
Gomes said: "My first game at The Lane wasn't even a league game, but the atmosphere against Roma was unbelievable. I hope it will be the same for Sunderland.
"The same goes for the travelling support for the game against Middlesbrough, which was great for the team and very important for our confidence.
"I know it will be a difficult game against Sunderland, but we play to win at home and the fans will be behind us, so we have every chance of a win."
On his introduction to Premier League football, Gomes added: "Goalkeepers only stop the ball, but I could tell the quality of the opposition was of a very high level, and this requires a lot of concentration from the goalkeeper.
"The football is played at a very high pace and is also very technical, and I'm in no doubt that it's the best in the world."
