Glenn Hoddle does not expect his team to make any headlines should they win at Burnley in the Worthington Cup tonight. Losing, however, would be a different matter.
Premiership clubs progressing in the early stages of cup competitions is considered the norm, however tricky the assignment may be. Away ties to Division One clubs definitely fall into the 'tricky' category, but little in the way of column inches are spared when Premiership clubs emerge unscathed.
"It's not big news if we win, but it's massive news if we get knocked out," reasoned Glenn. "It's the same for every Premiership side playing a team from a lower division."
Glenn added that cup football is not a break from the rigours of the Premiership for us as he considers it, at the moment, just as important for us to succeed in.
"We've got to be really focused and it's a big game for us. They are all big games now. In the Premiership it is very difficult to maintain consistency and get points because you can see how many teams have improved and are getting closer to the top three teams.
"When it comes to cup football it is another important obstacle to be crossed. This is an important cup for us and is a route into Europe. We've got to try and get it right."
