Memory Lane for Son

Memories of his Spurs debut are sure to come flooding back for Heung-Min Son when we host Sunderland this weekend.

The South Korean international made his first appearance in our colours in the reverse fixture at the Stadium of Light back in September, following his transfer from German side Bayer Leverkusen.

A solitary goal from Ryan Mason gave us our first league win of the season that day but, for Sonny, it’s his first encounter with our superb fanbase that stands out most in his recollections of the game.

“Of course, my first game was against Sunderland and I am very excited to play against them again on Saturday,” said the 23-year-old.

“For me it wasn’t my best game but we won 1-0, it was an important result and I was excited to play for the fans that day. I always want to put on a good performance for them and, for sure, I try everything and give 100 per cent whenever I’m on the pitch to try to give something back to them.”

Sonny knows there will be no room for sentiment come 12.45pm on Saturday, though, as we look to come up with an instant response following Wednesday’s disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Leicester City.

A second half replacement for Tom Carroll against the Foxes, Sonny says concentration will be key if we’re to get the better of the Black Cats.

“Wednesday night was very unlucky,” he assessed. “Every game is very important for us but Saturday is especially important now and we must concentrate on the pitch.

“I think Sunderland are a very good team, they have a good striker in Jermain Defoe, an ex-player of Spurs, but we must look just at us. We play very well, normally we have a very good defence, we work very hard for the other team to stay at zero goals and for us to win.

“We also have a very good offensive side – it’s not easy but we will try everything to get the three points on Saturday.”
