Jermain's turn of foot and 25-yarder was the difference between the sides as we clinched a 1-0 win against Birmingham City.
His third goal in four Premiership games was in front of Sven Goran Eriksson and there was little surprise to see the livewire striker named in the England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Austria on Saturday and Poland next Wednesday, September 8.
So was Jermain looking England class? "Definitely," said Heskey who, as it turned out, was left out of Eriksson's squad.
"Jermain's looking lively. He's done well, done brilliantly. I've seen him from when he was growing up and I've always known of him and he's come on leaps and bounds.
"You can see he's enjoying his game and that's what you get when you are in that form. I'm sure he'll continue to do brilliantly."
Emile Heskey was full of praise for Jermain Defoe after the striker lit up the Lane again on Saturday.
