Just as one player returns — as Ben Thatcher did against Birmingham City on Tuesday — another seems to fall by the wayside.
The latest casualty was German midfielder Steffen Freund who pulled up with hamstring problem after just nine minutes.
It is a worrying injury for Freund because he had a similar problem last season that kept him sidelined for two months.
Freund revealed: “I hope it is not a big injury. Last year I was out for eight weeks and I hope I can come back quicker and help the team.
“I hope it is not a big problem but the muscle was tight and I hope it’s not pulled.”
Freund was due for a scan on the problem on Wednesday and ruled himself out for the visit of Sunderland on Saturday.
Freund joins Sol Campbell, Steffen Iversen, Chris Armstrong, Mauricio Taricco and Sergei Rebrov on the missing list.
At least the news is better about Taricco. The Argentinian star is back jogging again after undergoing groin surgery last week.
We simply cannot escape injury problems at the moment.
