'It started to get a bit worrying' - Harry Kane on Newport

Sun 28 January 2018, 09:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Kane gave credit to Newport after spoiling the script of a classic FA Cup fairytale on Saturday night.

It was all set up for the League Two side to add another chapter to football’s most famous cup competition and they took the opportunity with both hands in the first half.

Roared on by the capacity home crowd, Newport piled on the pressure, created chances and it was difficult to complain when Padriag Amond headed them into the lead n 38 minutes.

Mauricio Pochettino had a change around at half-time, introduced Heung-Min Son and we started to turn it around. Dele Alli also soon arrived off the bench as we  started to pin the home side back.

Sonny was denied by Joe Day but our pressure finally told when Harry tapped home after Sonny flicked on Kieran Trippier’s corner on 82 minutes.

We might have snatched it but Day blocked Harry’s effort and Dele was inches away from Harry’s cross. Instead, we’ll do it all again at Wembley next midweek – the replay is provisionall scheduled for Wednesday 7 February but remains subject to change.

Harry was just pleased to be in the hat for the fifth round draw tomorrow (BBC1, 7.20pm).

“It was very difficult and credit to Newport, they had a game plan, made it difficult for us and we weren't great, especially in the first half.

“Newport kept us there until the 82nd minute and it did start to get a bit worrying towards the end but we got the goal and we're still in the FA Cup.

“We managed to get out with a draw and we'll take that. We're still in the hat and hopefully we can now beat them in the replay.”

Newport’s first half display came as no surprise to Harry, who cut his professional teeth as a youngster in loan spells at Leyton Orient and Millwall.

“We get spoilt sometimes in the Premier League and this is a good experience for everyone,” said Harry, skipper on the day. “They are in League Two and I guess everyone thought we’d go through but it’s not like that, especially in English football. We're just happy to be in the hat.

“We'll be strong favourites now at Wembley but we've got to make sure we go and win that game and get into the fifth round.”
