Gus Poyet would love to tell us about his part in a 1-0 win at West Ham six years ago - but he doesn't know too much about it!

First team coach Gus was in his first season as a player at Spurs and stuck his head where it hurts to create the winning goal for Les Ferdinand at Upton Park on November 25, 2001.

Gus clashed heads with Trevor Sinclair and as Les celebrated, Gus was out for the count. He was so dazed that he spent nearly five minutes standing in the West Ham six-yard box before he could be persuaded to leave the field.

“I have a few funny stories about it,” beamed Gus, recalling the incident as he helps Juande Ramos and Marcos Alvarez prepare the team for the short trip to East London on Sunday. “People have told me so many things about that day and I can’t remember any of it. I was completely gone.

“The first reaction was the ball was coming, I was going to head it and the next thing I knew I was in hospital thinking ‘what’s going on?’. I even still had my shin pads on!

“I watched it on television and it was scary, especially for my family watching, my wife was very nervous. I was out for two and half hours, but I was okay in the end.

“Anyway we won the game, so it was worth it!”
