We asked our resident Dutchman and goalkeeping coach for his thoughts on van Nistelrooy when the deal was clinched to take him from PSV Eindhoven to Old Trafford for £19m in the summer.
Hans said then: "He is a great player and has been a great finisher wherever he’s been. He will definitely score goals here and I’m looking forward to seeing him play."
Van Nistelrooy, who scored 57 league goals in 67 games for PSV, was an unknown quantity to many back then but everyone knows him now. Tipped for Player of the Year honours, he has bagged 30 goals already this term.
Hans admitted the only surprise to him was how quickly van Nistelrooy had settled.
"He can create goals out of nowhere," said Hans. "All of a sudden he has a yard and boom, it's in the back of the net. The only thing that has surprised me is the amount he's put in the back of the net already.
"He's adapted himself so quickly. I said he would be some player but's he's proved himself already.
"If you look at the season so far if it wasn't for him, Manchester United might have been struggling. It's another very shrewd buy from Sir Alex Ferguson."
So how do you stop him? With difficulty, Hans suggested, although one plan might be to cut out the service.
Hans added: "He has superb service from both sides with Giggsy and Becks and with the crosses coming in, he will score goals, simple as that."
Hans Segers said last year that Ruud van Nistelrooy would be a hit at Manchester United - he has been proved right and then some!
