Harry Kane finally broke Hampton & Richmond's resistance as our Spurs XI secured a 1-1 draw at the Beveree Stadium on Tuesday night.
The home team from the Blue Square (Conference) South scored early and spent the next 65 minutes resolutely defending their lead as our young team piled on the pressure.
Kane, on as substitute just before the hour, was there when it mattered in the 74th minute, following in after Kudus Oyenuga's low shot was touched onto the post by goalkeeper Matt Lovett.
The lads hammered in another seven attempts at goal in the final 15 minutes but a winner proved elusive.
Tim Sherwood handed a debut at this level to Academy first year trainee Laste Dombaxe with Anton Blackwood coming into central defence alongside Calum Butcher. Ryan Mason played off lone striker Jon Obika, with Jake Livermore and Dean Parrett in central midfield, Andros Townsend and Dombaxe left to bomb down the flanks.
Chances were at a premium in the first half with Hampton & Richmond happy to sit back after taking an early lead.
It was a decent goal as well. Danny Allen-Page picked out Nathan Collier at the far post and Collier cushioned his pass into James Simmonds, who finished well from 10 yards, just eight minutes on the clock.
Mason went close after Townsend's break down the left and Parrett drilled just wide on the half-hour as it stayed 1-0 at half-time.
The pattern of the game was set and continued in the second half as the home side pulled eight men behind the ball and soaked up the pressure.
Dombaxe headed wide and Lovett produced the save of the match to tip around Mason's curler before a host of substitutions saw Kane, Oyenuga, Jake Nicholson, Nathan Byrne and Olumide Durojaiye all enter the fray.
Two of those substitutes combined to equalise in the 74th minute. Mason found Oyenuga at the far post, his controlled finish was tipped onto the post by Lovett but Kane was there to ram the rebound into the roof of the net.
Adam Smith, lively from right-back all night, went close twice, Butcher headed over twice, Kane and finally Mason all tried their luck in the final 15 minutes, but it wasn't to be this time.
