He was an unused substitute as Ireland, including Stephen Carr and Robbie Keane, suffered a 2-0 defeat in Basle. Russia beat Georgia to secure a play-off spot and relegate Ireland to third in the group.
"I was disappointed not to get on to be honest, especially with how it all turned out," admitted Gary. "But that's life I suppose.
"We now have to look forward to the World Cup qualification and I'm looking to get playing again.
"Ireland has gone well for me recently, I think I'm the highest scorer in the Euro 2004 qualifiers.
"All the lads are gutted because we worked hard to get matters back into our hands - if we'd have won the last two games we would have been through. It wasn't to be though and we have to move on."
Gary Doherty is determined to look ahead after Ireland's exit from the European Championships.
