Gutted for Leds

Michael Dawson admitted he was ‘devastated' for Ledley King after his injury in England's World Cup opener against the USA.

Ledley picked up a groin injury in the first half and was withdrawn at half-time as it ended 1-1 in Rustenburg on Saturday.

'Daws' remained on the bench as Liverpool's Jamie Carragher came on for the second half.

Our Player of the Season remains in the mix for England's second group match against Algeria on Friday evening but Carragher is firm favourite to hold onto his place and start alongside John Terry.

England insist they are assessing Ledley on a 'day-to-day' basis and early reports suggest the injury is not as bad as first feared.

"I was devastated for Ledley," said Michael. "He's my friend, my team-mate and I know what he's been through to get here.

"He's disappointed, as you'd expect. He'll be out for Friday but hopefully not too much longer than that.

"It's tough for him back at Spurs when he's not training with the lads every day. I know how frustrated I get when I'm not involved like that.

"Ledley copes with it so well and he's brilliant when he plays. It's a real pity for him."
