The strapping and speedy England man has been central to Liverpool's recent 'recovery' as they prepare to visit the Lane on Sunday. Since his return from a three-match ban the Anfield outfit have overcome Auxerre and Bolton - winning the Worthington Cup against Manchester United inbetween. He was then the dominent figure in the creditable 1-1 UEFA Cup draw at Celtic.
Gus feels that Gerrard is a vital component to any Liverpool success.
"For sure," stated the Uruguayan. "I was surprised when people were saying Steven Gerrard was having a bad season. No chance.
"With the greatest respect to the Liverpool team, I think they would be better off with Gerrard in the team all the time even if he is not at his best.
"He wants to win all the time, he wants to chase and tackle for every ball and you can feel that he is playing for his team.
"He can feel the colours, he can feel everything in the club and he tries to push his teammates.
"He's young and is the kind of player, for me, that has to play always."
After many years in the game Gus Poyet should know a good midfielder when he sees one - and he likes what he sees in Liverpool's Steven Gerrard.
