But Gus is confident the last 16 tie is far from over anyway, and said: “When I was a player it was always good to play another game two or three days after a defeat, and I want these players to be the same.
“I know they will be ready for West Ham and we have to put on a good performance and win the game to go to Holland with a little more confidence.
“I think we still have a chance because I know what we’re capable of and it’s a difficult situation for PSV as well now.”
On last night’s game, Gus added: “It was a difficult game but that’s European football. We had chances to score but now we have to make amends.
“The goal was a mistake and you just have to accept it. Unfortunately it was Gilberto, who was playing his first game for us, but that’s football.
“Their goalkeeper made a lot of important saves and he was always in the right position. He was very good.”
Gus Poyet believes the best preparation for the return leg of our UEFA Cup tie with PSV Eindhoven next week will be victory over West Ham in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday. The First Team Coach feels another game within the space of three days will be the perfect way to get last night’s 1-0 first leg defeat against the Dutch out of our minds.
