The midfielder said at the start of November that the games against the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea would indicate where we stood in terms of our Premiership ambitions this season.
Those games didn't exactly go to plan but after a little blip, we've recovered to go four games unbeaten, play our best football of the season against Leeds and then Arsenal and sit well positioned in seventh spot just behind the leading pack.
Gus explained: "It hasn't worked out too bad after the little run and from now on it's up to us.
"We don't have to worry too much about the opposition. We have go out every game and perform like we did against Arsenal.
"It is important we build on that performance and that is up to the players. Sometimes when you have such support from the fans it is easier but it is up to us."
Gus had mixed emotions when reflecting on Sunday's 1-1 draw against the Gunners.
He added: "The problem is when you've played so well against a team like Arsenal and then you only come away with one point.
"We are a little disappointed but at the same time we've showed everyone, because it was on television, we can do it.
"We can play at that level and we can do the things that everyone expects of us.
"Now we have to have the same motivation and level for every game but that is difficult because this game is special.
"People may say 'professionals, they should be motivated the same' but I tell you now, it is different. It's only natural."
Gus Poyet has placed the emphasis on the players to build on Sunday's display against Arsenal.
