Gus itching to return

Posted on 18 September 2001 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Gus Poyet has handed Simon Davies the ultimate accolade — by insisting the youngster’s displays mean he is not guaranteed a starting place at Sunderland.
Midfielder Gus is itching to get back into the Premiership melting pot after completing his three-match suspension against Chelsea on Sunday.
He is available for Wednesday’s encounter at the Stadium of Light but says he will have no complaints if he starts on the bench.
“When someone gets the opportunity to go onto the pitch, like Simon Davies, and he’s done fantastic, it is up to the manager,” Gus pointed out. “The only problems we have at the back because of the injuries.
“I’m excited by the thought of coming back, maybe too much.
“The only problem is to get back to the maximum but first I have to get into the team because I don’t know if I will play.
“After that I have to get back to the same level and then better because we have to improve.
“We have five points in five games which is not enough. The next three games coming up are big games and we want something from those games.”
Gus suggested that our performances had perhaps warranted greater reward than those five points so far.
He explained: “If you look at the first game of the season there was a penalty decision with Tano, that could be two more points, go to the Everton game where we were winning before the red cards, that is two more, another one against Chelsea — that is 10 points and we could be near the top of the table.
“But all the lads can do is look to the next game and try to get the three points.”
And few in the stadium were as animated as Gus as we lost out to his former club Chelsea on Sunday.
He added: “We were unlucky because we came back twice, especially after the penalty, which was difficult to accept, but we came back again and you are thinking perhaps we can win, 11 against 10, but football is like that.
“I don’t know what it is between Spurs and Chelsea but there is always something wrong for Spurs. That is life and we have to handle it and perhaps wait for the next time.”
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
