A crowd of several hundred gathered at Port Soif as Guernsey Rovers Vets played host to the Spurs Legends team on Saturday (April 18), with a healthy presence from Guernsey Spurs in attendance.
One of more than 120 official Supporters’ Clubs worldwide, Guernsey Spurs regularly meet at the Pony Inn to watch our matches and travel over to White Hart Lane to take in at least two live games each season.
On this occasion, they got a special chance to see some of their former Spurs heroes in action on their own patch with past stars like Darren Anderton, Mark Falco, Tony Galvin, Paul Miller, Graham Roberts and Andy Sinton taking to the field – joined by Ossie Ardiles as guest manager – in what turned out to be an 8-4 victory for the Legends.
Glenn Pugh, chairman of Guernsey Spurs, was thrilled with the chance to watch and meet some of our ex-players and revealed the occasion was particularly poignant for him and his family.
“I really loved seeing the Legends playing in Guernsey,” he said. “I’m 35 and it was great seeing the likes of Darren Anderton and Stuart Nethercott as I remember them well. What made it even better for me is that my dad made it to the game too. He’s been very unwell, this was his first outing from the hospital in five months and he really enjoyed the match.
“We don’t normally get to experience anything like this on our island and everyone I have spoken to really enjoyed the day.
“As an official Supporters’ Club, we try to come to at least two games per season. This year the club went to the Lane to see Spurs play Everton and Leicester – both were really good games – and a couple of our members are talking about going to the last game of the season at Everton.”
