With an almost clean-bill of health, Gregory has options in every position going into the Premiership opener against Spurs.
And he told www.avfc.co.uk: “I feel they’re all ready to start at Tottenham. There’s only Ian Taylor missing through injury. Most of them have had a little taste in pre-season and they’re all looking good.
“I fact, a major problem tomorrow, and this is always a great problem for a manager, is: Which 11 do you pick to start the game.”
The Villa boss continued: “Look at my two goalkeepers. Both of them have done exceptionally well pre-season. Peter Schmeichel’s not played that many minutes, but what he has done when he’s been on the pitch has been first-class. Peter Enckelman has done very well. He’s kept us in the InterToto Cup on more than one occasion.
“So it starts with the No1 jersey and that’s a difficult one to call, even now. I’ve got that to deal with and then I’ve got the ten outfield places that are all running along similar lines.”
Villa rounded-off their preparations with a 2-0 win against Racing Santander, leaving Gregory satisfied with the overall build-up.
He added: “The boys have done extremely well pre-season. There’s going to be a few disappointed on Saturday. There’s going to be a few even more disappointed that won’t even get a place on the bench.
“But that’s Premiership football for you. That’s squad football and that’s really what our game is about at the moment.
“It’s a hard one to call tomorrow, to have to pick the 11 that start. But that’s why I sit in the big chair and have to make the decisions. Somebody has to do it and I have to make sure I get it right.”
John Gregory starts the season with a selection headache at White Hart Lane tomorrow. And the Villa boss admitted: “That’s just the way I like it.”
