Micky is a Spurs legend who played 170 times for us, helping the club lift the FA Cup in 1982 and his highlight, the 1984 UEFA Cup Final.
It’s not as well known, however, that Micky was a coach at our Academy and in the late 1990s, stumbled across a talented six-year-old by the name of Ryan Mason.
Eighteen years on and Ryan is now a mainstay of the first team squad having made his breakthrough last season. Now with 51 appearances, Ryan’s rapid rise last season saw him win his first England cap in March.
“I coached Ryan from the age of six,” said Micky. “I also used to coach professionals who had been released to help them try to get back into the game and Ryan would come and help me out.
“For me, it’s a bit surreal, this six-year-old lad who showed me he had a footballing brain, I thought ‘this kid’s got something special’ and to see him now, it’s quite incredible.”
You can join Micky and Ryan at the Lane on Thursday, January 21 when the pair will discuss their paths through the youth system to walking out in front of 36,000 fans at White Hart Lane.
Micky added: “It will be an in-depth night with myself and Ryan talking about our routes into the first team and the help I gave him and hopefully much more about Ryan than me, because he deserves everything he’s got.”
