Graham after Arnhem

Posted on 13 August 2000  - 12:00

English Barclays Premiership

George Graham insisted that Vitesse Arnhem provided us with our toughest pre-season friendly to date on Saturday night. The home side certainly had us on the back foot in the first half but once again the defence held firm and we took over in the second half.

Steffen Iversen took his tally to seven goals in eight pre-season games and we kept our seventh clean sheet as we held on for a 2-0 win.

The boss said: "This was a much more difficult test against a very bright Vitesse Arnhem team. I thought in the first half, particularly, they dominated play, looked sharper, better physically but after half-time we changed tactically and did a lot better on the break.

"I thought their midfield in the first half broke well and they gave us some problems. They pushed us back in the first half. We were fortunate to go in 0-0 at half-time and then we improved after the break. It was an excellent work out for us."

Vitesse Arnhem boss Ronald Koeman said: "In the first half we played well, had a lot of possession and two or three good chances, but it is important that you score. In the second half it was different."

We lost our control, Tottenham changed a little bit and scored two goals out of three or four possibilities. We made it easier for them in the second half."

Graham told the post-match news conference that he was aiming for Europe via our Premiership finish next term. As for the clean sheets, he added: "I'm a typical Scotsman, I don't like to give anything away."
