Spurs Lodge was swathed in sunshine on Monday as the players returned after a mini-break to prepare for Wednesday’s trip to Reading and John was in no mood to make allowances for the sweltering climate.
"We’ll keep stopping, but they’ll being doing just the same amount of work — and they’re in for a hard day today I’m afraid.
"We train the same but we’ve got to make sure they drink more, take plenty of fluids.
"To be honest, this is normal for pre-season, it’s been quite cool this year up to now. It’s very hot at the moment.
"Our preparations have gone well, but now it is very hot, and we going to carry on as before and make sure they take plenty of fluids.
Asked if continued sunshine would make him consider rescheduling sessions to cooler periods of the day, John quipped: It’s not Spain is it? — Let’s be fair!
"We would look at it if it kept up for two or three weeks. We’ve got games on as well, so normally it’s a morning session and it’s not too bad.
"We’ve had evening sessions so we could go back to that — we can do whatever we want."
The boys have currently got another essential to carry in the washbag — a high-factor sun cream, and one player in particular needs to cover up well.
"Unless it’s Gary Doherty we’ll usually be alright," added John. "We’ve got to protect ourselves, especially the fairer skin boys, but I don’t think we’ve got to worry too much."
John Gorman has got little sympathy for the boys in the current hot spell. Asked if he alters the training regime, the taskmaster replied: "Yeah, we train harder!"
