Heurelho Gomes is confident we can finish in the top four again and take our place in the Champions League next season.
The goalkeeper held his hands up to the mistake that allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to score the only goal of the night in our Champions League quarter-final, second leg against Real Madrid.
The players left the Lane to a standing ovation as the fans paid tribute to a fantastic first campaign in Europe’s elite competition.
As the dust settled, Gomes was looking ahead to the rest of the season and our bid to finish in the top four of the Premier League again.
That starts against Arsenal on Wednesday night – a match with happy memories for the Brazilian after his stunning trio of saves in last season’s win at the Lane.
Asked if we could make the top four again, Gomes insisted: “We have a great squad, quality players and we can finish in the top four again. We are strong enough.
“We have a lot of massive games coming up, the first one against Arsenal and we have to pick up as many points as we can to finish in the top four but yes, we can do it.”
As for that goal, Gomes added: “I’m very disappointed and it wasn’t an easy moment for me, but I know that I’ve helped the team as well. It’s tough but I have to keep going.”
