Our assistant manager took over Glenn's pre-Sunderland press conference at Spurs Lodge and told the gathered press the news.
Derek suffered a stroke on Tuesday. He was 68. John said: "It's very sad news. Derek was a fantastic chap and a huge Spurs fan who came to every game - he was with us on the plane on Sunday.
"It was very unexpected. I took Glenn up to the hospital in Harlow on Tuesday. Everything was done for him but it wasn't to be.
"I'm sure Derek would have wanted and I'm hoping that Glenn will be with us on Saturday. Chrissie (Hughton) and I will take over today and we'll see what happens over the next couple of days."
The sad news comes after John suffered a loss himself just before the Worthington Cup Final - his father in law Lewis passed away last Thursday.
John Gorman had the sad task on Thursday morning of announcing that Glenn Hoddle's father Derek passed away on Wednesday night.
