After just missing out on the European Championships - he was squad number 24, only 23 went to Portugal - Jermain looked deadly in pre-season and opened his Premiership account in our first-day draw against Liverpool on Saturday.
That typical poacher's strike was in front of England boss Sven Goran Eriksson at the Lane and Eriksson called up Jermain, Ledley King and Paul Robinson for the friendly at Newcastle's St James Park.
Eriksson named his side early and Ledley will start with Jermain expected to come into the action in the second half.
Speaking at England's training HQ, Jermain said: "It's a good experience for me to be training with the squad again. It was disappointing to miss out on Euro 2004 after being involved in Sardinia.
"I went on holiday to the Caribbean to see my grandparents, watched the tournament and thought 'I wish I was there'.
"I have to put that behind me and work hard now that I am in the squad again.
"It's always nice to get a goal in the first game of the season and I'm glad it was in front of the England manager.
"There have been big changes at Spurs with the new manager and there have been a lot of additions to the squad. Hopefully this can be a big season for me."
Jermain Defoe insists he's delighted to be back in the England fold again as he prepares for a stint off the substitutes' bench against Ukraine tonight.
