Giovani dos Santos will kick-off the World Cup next summer after Mexico were paired with South Africa in Friday night's draw.
South Africa are the seeded team in Group A and Mexico were drawn first as team A2 and will therefore take on the hosts in the opener at Soccer City, Johannesburg on Friday, June 11.
"It's such a special game to be involved in," said Gio after the draw on Friday night.
"The opening game of the World Cup has to be one of the biggest games in the world.
"Just think about all the people around the world who will be watching that game and the interest in South Africa. It will be fantastic, a great honour."
That won't be the only big game for Gio and Mexico as they've also drawn France in Group A, with Uruguay completing the quartet.
Further Spurs interest comes with Wilson Palacios' Honduras in Group H alongside highly-fancied Spain, Switzerland and Chile while Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Sebastien Bassong will line-up for Cameroon against Holland, Denmark and Japan in Group E.
