Gilberto talks so much more than just football in an exclusive interview with the Club's official monthly magazine, hotspur, now in stores.

The Brazilian international opens up about the tragedy of growing up in Rio de Janeiro without a father, a policeman who was gunned down fighting against the city's gangs when Gilberto was just six months old.

In this exclusive interview, the defender says: "To lose my father was obviously very hard for my mother and for my family and although I was only a baby at the time, it was also harder for me the older I got.

"My mother is a special lady, given what she went through and the sacrifices she's had to make in her life, but there are certain things that you can only talk to your father about.

"It is true I had four older brothers, but they were often out doing their own thing, and the older I got, the harder I found it. It was difficult to understand why this loss had happened to our family, but from a positive point of view, it also made me appreciate life more.

"I realised how precious life can be, so that's why I have always tried to make the most of any opportunities that have come my way; when it comes to football, I've always pushed myself hard to be the best I can. I've wanted to play for the best teams because I know that nothing lasts forever."

Gilberto goes on to talk in-depth about his football career, with highlights including playing with his older brother Nelio at Flamengo.

On this subject, he adds: "Was he better than me? I think so, but when I first joined the club the TV commentators would refer to me as ‘Gilberto, the younger brother of Nelio', whereas after I'd been at the club for a while they would say ‘There's Nelio, the older brother of Gilberto'. Maybe there's your answer!"

The interview concludes with Gilberto describing his first international goal for Brazil - in the 2006 World Cup finals against Japan - and his time so far at Spurs.

But the only place to read the interview in full is by picking up a copy of the latest hotspur magazine, which also features Ledley King, Alan Hutton, Luka Modric and Mathew Horne - the star of hit TV show Gavin and Stacey.
