George's programme notes

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Naturally I am disappointed with our last two away results.

Once again we were guilty of giving opponents head starts and conceding goals through individual mistakes. That has got to be eliminated.

However, in each case, our excellent team spirit almost saw us through. We deserved to return with at least a point, and probably more, from both Leeds United and Coventry City and that is something that we can build on.

Looking back over our season so far, there has only been one game in which we have been totally outplayed — away at Newcastle United. Apart from that one, we could and should have achieved something from Middlesbrough, Charlton Athletic, Leeds and now Coventry.

And had we gained three more points from those games then we could be up to sixth in the Premiership now because the league is so tightly congested in mid-table.

Obviously I am convinced that an improvement will come — and before too long. It takes time for any new blend to bed in and there is no doubt we are a better team than results to date suggest.

I never complain about injuries because they are part and parcel of the game but we are unfortunate in that the majority of ours have been to defenders with Sol Campbell, Mauricio Taricco and Luke Young amongst those sidelined.

However, there is always a positive side to any negative situation in football and in this case it is the opportunity provided for younger players to show what they can do. Alton Thelwell, who was on the bench at Coventry, is a case in point and he has been doing very well for our reserves and in training.

Now we face Derby County who are already fighting for their Premiership lives.

It is clear, on the law of averages, that they will get their breakthrough before too long but we have to make sure that they do not start their revival against us today!

In Jim Smith they possess one of the most popular and hard-working managers around and he has the vast knowledge and experience to be able to turn it around.

But we also need a win and with Sergei Rebrov proving how well he is settling in by taking over as our top goalscorer, I will be looking to our players to put in a comprehensive and convincing display this afternoon.
