The manager revealed that Sol Campbell (pictured), Steffen Freund, Oyvind Leonhardsen, Steffen Iversen and Mauricio Taricco all trained this week and are all hoping to return ‘in a couple of weeks’.
He then pinpointed those absentees and the size of his squad as the key points as to why we’ve suffered such an inconsistent season.
“The injuries are progressing,” he said. “Campbell trained this morning, Iversen, Leonhardsen, Freund, Taricco have all trained. Hopefully within the next couple of weeks we’ll get about £40m of talent back. They are in rehab and almost ready.”
Unfortunately none of the five will be ready for Sunday’s visit of Liverpool and the boss has the added problem of Ben Thatcher’s suspension. It could mean a chance for Alton Thelwell or Ledley King.
“The problem this season with our inconsistency has been two major points,” added George. “One is that our squad is not big or talented enough and the other major point is that we’ve had injuries to key players. I’ve mentioned them all.
“We haven’t got a big enough squad to handle it. We’ve one of the best home records in the Premiership but one of the worst away records in the Premiership.
“We’ve just got to carry on and get results until these players come back. Hopefully I can then add to the squad in the near future.”
