George: We have to grind it out

Posted on 4 February 2001 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

George Graham insists it will be a case of grinding out results until our crocked strikers return.
Speaking after Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Charlton — our fourth goalless affair on the trot in the Premiership — boss George admitted we were having problems scoring goals with Les Ferdinand, Steffen Iversen, Chris Armstrong and now Dave McEwen all out injured.
He stated: “We are defensively sound but we have got problems scoring goals and we know it. We have to make sure it doesn't escalate into our midfield and the defence.
“We have just got to get through this but it should give us confidence to go forward knowing we are tight at the back.
“We played well at West Ham on Wednesday but we didn't today and that sums up our inconsistency.
“If we had not had problems with injuries then I would say we are performing below my expectations but you cannot legislate for having four strikers missing through injury.”
Charlton edged a disappointing first half but we were much the better side after the break with the introduction of Tim Sherwood and young winger Matthew Etherington completely transforming the atmosphere.
Etherington lifted the ground with his willingness to take players on down the left flank and may have finally dragged himself into contention again.
George reflected: “In the first half they Charolton the much brighter team. They were neat and tidy and a yard quicker both physically and mentally. I was happy to go in at 0-0.
“We improved, Tim and the boy Etherington, just 19, livened it up a bit but I thought generally Charlton played well.”
Listen to George's post-match press conference in full by clicking here
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
