George on Walker situation

Posted on 5 February 2001 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

George Graham has reiterated that he believes he was right to recall goalkeeper Neil Sullivan and that Ian Walker ‘understood his position’ after a meeting at Spurs Lodge on Monday morning.
Boss George also insisted that Walker had not asked for a transfer.
Sullivan was recalled for Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Charlton in the Premiership after serving a two-match suspension.
Walker performed admirably in Sullivan’s absence and was naturally disappointed to be back on the bench after keeping two clean sheets.
He certainly had his say in Monday’s Evening Standard in which he is quoted: “I know now that I have no future at the club at all and the sooner I get away the better.
“I will speak to my agent this week to see what the next step is going to be because if there is no competition for places then there is no point in me staying here. It makes my position impossible.”
George stated on Monday afternoon: “I had a chat with Ian this morning, explained why Neil Sullivan came back into the team at his expense and although he wasn’t happy with it, he understood my position.
“Just to reiterate, Neil Sullivan lost his position through suspension and up to then he was outstanding in the team.
“Ian then played ever so well when Neil was out, brilliantly against Southampton, but I think it was right that I wanted Neil to come back because he was in outstanding form prior to suspension.
“I think this season has been good for Ian, he needs competition and by his two performances he has definitely improved. He is maturing as a goalkeeper.
“I’m in a very fortunate position where I have two outstanding goalkeepers and they have to accept, at a big club like Tottenham, they are going to have competition for places. That’s the way it’s going to be.
“I just wish we had more outfield players to have that problem with.
“The outfield players are going to have to accept it and it happens at other clubs, players in and out for different reasons and I don’t see how it should be any different for goalkeepers.
“I can assure you that this morning that we had a chat and he did not ask me for a transfer.”
Listen to what George had to say by clicking here
By Paul Miles
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
