George: 'I've lost injury battle'

Posted on 24 November 2000 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

George Graham admits he’s lost the injury battle at White Hart Lane.
The boss was determined to clear out the treatment room when he first arrived at Tottenham back in October 1998 and although things looked good at the start of this season when the likes of Les Ferdinand, Tim Sherwood, Darren Anderton, Willem Korsten and Ramon Vega all came back from long-term problems, this season has been a tale of woe yet again.
The latest victim is Luke Young, outstanding in recent weeks, who will be out for at least a month with a fractured foot.
George commented: “Luke Young has three weeks in plaster and then we’ll have to look at it again. It’s a bit sad really because he was outstanding last week against Liverpool but it’s another injury jinx for Tottenham. I’ve not won that battle.
“We’re still striving but we’re still picking up long-term injuries to key players like Sol, he’s been out nine weeks, Leonhardsen, Anderton’s been out, it’s ongoing and ongoing and one of the reasons I’ve said that we need more players.”
Quizzed as to why we’ve suffered so many problems, George said he was convinced that it was just part of the modern game.
He added: “You hopefully get a squad big enough to cope with it. I don’t whether or not it’s just bad luck or if it’s just the modern game with other clubs having key players injured like Leeds at the present time.
“You could see against Real Madrid how they suffered without some of their key players.
“It’s part of the game and something maybe all Premiership clubs will have to take on board, get a bigger squad and a bigger wage bill. It means at the same time when everyone is fit they will be carrying a lot of players.”
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
