George: 'He'll get better'

Posted on 8 January 2001 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

George Graham is backing new hero Gary Doherty to get better and better.
The young Irishman, still just 20, was the toast of Tottenham on Saturday night after his injury time header booked our place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
A defender or striker — he played in both positions for previous club Luton Town, has played in both for us and won full caps up front for Ireland — Doherty has caught the eye in a defensive role in our last two matches, capping his own displays with a goal in each game.
Boss George enthused: “I thought young Gary Doherty was outstanding in the back three not just because of the goal but he was coming out with the ball and looking very comfortable going forward. That was a big, big bonus.
“Gary has played three games for us this season, one at centre-forward and now two at the back. He looks very comfortable on the ball, excellent in the air and he will get a lot better.”
George has no doubts that Doherty will now take his defensive role forward and, for the time being at least, has indicated that he will be settling down alongside Sol Campbell and Chris Perry.
George added: “I definitely see his future as a defender but he is talented and could go forward and play as a target man in an emergency.
“In the second half he was coming out superbly with the ball, really attacking and we didn’t want to play for a draw but give credit to Orient, they pushed us back.
“I thought he pushed forward and made some great runs later in the game.
“We played as a three, Sol played left, Perry played middle and he played right and there is no reason why he can’t stay there.”
Doherty’s late, late show set up a fourth round tie away against either Charlton Athletic or Dagenham & Redbridge — they replay on Wednesday January 17 - on the weekend of January 27/28.
Spurs can be backed at 16/1 to lift the trophy in May - click onto SpursBet for all the details.
Listen to George's post-match thoughts in full by clicking here
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
