The big defender was a late call-up into Sven Goran Eriksson's squad but had to sit out Sunday's friendly defeat against Denmark after a back problem struck last Friday.
With a number of changes on the agenda at Old Trafford a first cap looked on for Anthony - John Terry and Matthew Upson ended up playing the full 90 minutes.
Anthony reflected: "No-one actually said to me that I was definitely going to play but Sven said at at team meeting that there were 10, 11 changes that he could make and he would change it around as much as he can.
"In the end John Terry and Matthew Upson played 90 minutes so it looks likely I might have played.
"It's very disappointing for me but Sven did say to me as long as I continue playing well for the club, I'll get another chance. I just have to keep believing."
Anthony Gardner says he has to believe he'll get another chance after the disappointment of missing out on a first England cap.
