Nigel Quashie scored the decisive goal at St Mary's in an open game in which both teams squandered clear cut chances - most of the best ones falling to our players, who found keeper Paul Smith in inspired form.
The central defender says there is always the danger of the home team snatching a goal when a period of dominance goes unrewarded.
"We tried to push on to them and created a lot of chances, but couldn't put the ball in the net. When you do this away from home it is often only a matter of time before the opposition takes a chance.
"This happened and we end up chasing the game.
"It could have been a fantastic week to set us up for the Newcastle game. But we will hold our heads up high and we will bounce back."
Anthony Gardner is confident the team will bounce back from the Barclays Premiership reverse against Southampton on Saturday.
