Gardner hopes to make the cut

Posted on 7 November 2003  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Anthony Gardner reports that the hamstring injury that kept him out of last weekend's game against Bolton should not prevent him from being available for selection on Saturday.

The central defender, who previously had missed only one game this season through suspension, felt his hamstring tighten slightly during the course of the Carling Cup tie against West Ham and missed out against Bolton more as a precaution.

"It is a little bit tight, but nothing to worry about," reported Anthony. "It was feeling a bit sore, which is why I missed out at the weekend - we didn't want to take any risks after the hard game against West Ham.

"The only game I missed before the Bolton game was the one where I was suspended. So generally I've been playing, different to last season where I was struggling to maintain any sort of run in the team. It should not be a problem for Saturday.

On returning to the team, Anthony will be hoping to avoid more collecting yellow cards in a short space of time, having quickly been shown five in the opening phase of the season.

"Yes, I picked up a few early on. I don't know why, it was for the sort of tackles that one week you get a yellow card and the other he will just blow his whistle and carry on. So you can accumulate them for not doing much wrong."

Anthony then saw the funny side when it was pointed out that it is unusual for him to accumulate a suspension quicker than picking up an injury...

"It is, and I'd rather it that way," he laughed, before looking ahead to the short trip to Arsenal tomorrow. As a defender he is pleased that the side is more compact defensively, but acknowledges the creative factor needs improving.

"Definitely happier, because we're not so easy to get through. It is the other side of it now and we've got to keep tight and still create things. We not creating much for the front boys at the moment so we need to fix that.

"Arsenal won 4-1 the other day and are flying a bit, so I wouldn't mind if we keep it tight and nick a goal somewhere.

"I do enjoy playing in these games, they are big games that players want to play in."
