Kevin Bond admitted it was wonderful to have full-backs capable of scoring the occasional ‘worldy’.
Benoit Assou-Ekotto hit an absolute rocket from 30 yards to secure another vital win against Everton on Wednesday night.
Leading 1-0 via Aaron Lennon’s fine opener, Benoit looked to have nothing on before letting rip just after the hour. That put the issue beyond doubt against the Toffees.
It was only Benoit’s second goal for the club and another strike for the scrapbook after opening his account with a similar screamer against Liverpool back in August, 2009.
And with his fellow full-back Kyle Walker already registering a massive goal from distance this season – the winner against Arsenal, no less, in October - it’s another string to our attacking bow.
“Benni’s goals are few and far between but when they do come, they are absolute worldies!” said assistant boss Kevin.
“It was a wonder strike, a fantastic goal and I thought he played really well on the night as well. It capped a great performance by him and the team.”
Asked what he was thinking when Benoit pulled the trigger, Kevin smiled: “You always think it will go in the stand!
“It was a terrific strike, but it’s lovely if the full-backs are bombing on and they are willing to take shots on from 20, 30 yards. That’s great for us."
