The Finnish international was back in the starting line-up against Charlton on Sunday after an ankle injury sustained in the final seconds against Aston Villa on January 21 ruled him out at Fulham last week.
However, Teemu only lasted 20 minutes of the 3-1 win at the Lane after taking a knock on the same ankle as early as the second minute.
He’s now fighting to be fit for the trip to Sunderland knowing that the likes of Tom Huddlestone and new arrival Danny Murphy – not to mention Edgar Davids, if fit – are snapping at his heels for a place in the line-up.
"I want to play, everyone wants to play and it’s frustrating to be injured again," said Teemu.
"Of course if you are injured you cannot play and there are so many quality players here at the moment.
"It was the same injury on Sunday, I hurt it quite badly when I went for the first corner in the second minute. I tried to carry on but it was too painful and I had to come off.
"It was very disappointing for me but the team won and that’s all that matters - we needed those three points and now we are back on course."
Speaking on Tuesday, Teemu was hopeful of being fit for selection for the Stadium of Light, another televised clash kicking-off at 1.30pm.
"I’m looking to get some training under my belt for the rest of the week and we’ll see how it goes from there."
Frustration is the name of the game for midfielder Teemu Tainio at the moment.
