Sir Bobby Robson was happy to return the compliment as he and David Pleat exchanged pleasantries last week.
Our acting boss David described the Newcastle United manager as 'fantastically enthusiastic, humble and hard-working' in the build-up to last weekend's Premiership fixture.
Sir Bobby, formerly of Ipswich Town, Barcelona, PSV and, of course, England, said he was delighted David had been handed the reins until the end of the season.
"I think David Pleat is a fantastic football man," said Sir Bobby. "He's very hard working, very knowledgable about the game and he can ply that knowledge.
"He's a very good judge of a player and I'm very fond of David, he's been a good football man for many, many years in many, many aspects.
"I'm sure he's gone back wondering how he lost 4-0 because Tottenham looked a good side after a half an hour. The Robert goal changed the game. They have done well lately and it's not easy to come here, no-one could beat us here last season.
"David Pleat, for me, in a fine man in football. I'm glad he's got the job, how long for I don't know, but I'm glad he's got it. He will do a good job because he knows football."
