"It was shock for everyone," wrote Steffen in his weekly column. "Everyone knows there were a lot of rumours and pressure and problems in the papers but everyone was surprised.
"What can you say now? The answer for a player I think is that you don’t have a contract with the manager, you have a contract with Tottenham and no-one else, so play for the club."
Steffen added: "On Friday we were on our way home because we had a normal training session and I got the message about the manager. My only reaction now is that is a different situation.
"For me personally, I have to say thank you to George because he brought me to England, brought me to Tottenham and for me, that was the most important move in my career because I am in a different country. I have to say thank you to him."
