The German midfielder is preparing for a battle against Birmingham City at the Lane and more than aware of the significance of having a one in the year.
He said: “After the defeat at Chelsea it is important for the club and for the supporters to get into the next round.
“Birmingham are in a strong position and this is never an easy game against a club from the First Division but we are at home and in the end we have to win.
“It’s 2001 and the FA Cup and Worthington Cup are very important for Tottenham this year.”
You sense that Freund is still smarting from our 3-1 defeat at Fulham at the same stage of the competition last season.
“Fulham was a bad experience for me,” he admitted. “We played at Craven Cottage and you can see now how strong they are — they are favourites to reach the Premier League.
“This will also be a close game. My feeling is that Birmingham will stay deep, wait for a mistake and play well in defence
“We played them in pre-season and they are a strong, hard-working team. We have to match that and hopefully later win with our individual class.”
Steffen Freund has a simple message for Tuesday’s Worthington Cup tie: “We have to win.”
