Our German midfielder was convinced his season was over when he suffered knee ligament damage just a day before the FA Cup Final against Arsenal last month.
But he has already progressed to ball work in training and hopes to rejoin his team-mates in full training by the middle of next week.
It was suggested that his progress must give him an outside chance of figuring against United on May 19 but he remained pessimistic.
Steffen revealed: “As far as my injury is concerned things are looking good. I can play with the ball now, I can shoot, cross, everything has gone okay and I haven’t felt any pain yet.
“If it stays that way then I hope next week I can join in training with the team.
“I don’t think I will make it against United though.
“Next week is five weeks after my injury and I don’t think I will be fit enough.
“But, of course, it is my job and if I am okay and the manager says he wants me on the bench I will do it.
“The important thing for me is to train with the team and to see that my injury has gone. The main thing is to be back out there in training and that will be a good feeling going into the holiday.”
Steffen Freund is making giant strides on his comeback trail — but says he still believes he will miss out on the season’s finale against Manchester United.
