Even boss George Graham admitted that we looked ‘dead and buried’ when Matt Svensson made it 2-0 just after the break in Wednesday night’s thrilling fourth round tie.
But a moment of magic from Gary Doherty helped reduced the deficit and triggered a three-goal spell in five minutes to turn the tie around. Sergei Rebrov then wrapped it up with the fourth late on.
Midfielder Freund declared: “I believed at half-time that we had a chance to come back because we just needed one goal and we could score again and again. I had a situation with Borussia Dortmund, we were in the UEFA Cup, in extra time and we needed two goals which we got in the last two minutes of extra time. So I knew we could do it.
“No-one gives you a present in this competition. You have to work for it. Against Leyton Orient, scoring in the last minute was perfect but anyway I thought we were the better team.
“This time we were 2-0 down and if you come back after that than you have to give respect to the team.
“I believe we can go to the final this year. It is 2001 and the year for Tottenham.
“If you start to believe we can have a magic run in the FA Cup. Why not? Stockport will love to come to White Hart Lane but this is a good chance for us to be in the quarter-finals.”
Steffen Freund never stopped believing at Charlton — and he now believes we can go all the way in the FA Cup.
