Germany have to beat Finland and hope England slip up against Greece at Old Trafford to pinch a place in next summer's World Cup Finals.
But while both Steffen and Christian have admitted to the Official Spurs Website that it's all over, Steffen insists wing-back Christian deserves his chance again after an outstanding start to his Spurs career this season.
Steffen said: "The German squad has many injuries now so I hope that Christian Ziege will play.
"Even before he was at Tottenham I told everyone that he had that quality and for me he is the best down the left side in Germany.
"He is also one of the best in the Premier League, maybe the best. It is important for him to be back as well."
And he reiterated: "I'm not sure Germany will even beat Finland. They beat Greece 5-1 last time, Litmanen is in great form. I just think England will win the group."
Steffen Freund hopes his team-mate, friend and compatriot Christian Ziege will be part of an unlikely German triumph at the weekend.
