Our German midfielder believes our best chance of finishing in sixth place in the Premiership disappeared with Tuesday night's defeat against Chelsea.
We now need European qualification to go down to seventh place but a lot of pieces need to fall into place in the jigsaw to make that dream a reality - not least us beating Liverpool, Aston Villa, Leicester City and Manchester United with a depleted squad.
However, we are only four points behind seventh spot and, as Steffen insists, at least that gives us a focus.
He said: "I'm afraid that it looks like our chances of making it into the UEFA Cup places in the league have gone after we lost to Chelsea on Tuesday night.
"I think we needed to finish in sixth place and that was our big chance.
"We now need a lot of luck. First we have to hope that qualification goes down to seventh place and for that I think we need Leeds to win the Champions' League and Arsenal and Liverpool to finish second and third.
"Then we have to win our four remaining games and they will be very difficult anyway, against Liverpool, Aston Villa, Leicester and United, but we have many injury problems to cope with as well. This is very hard.
"I suppose the fact we are playing these teams might help, especially as Villa are also going for sixth or seventh. That will give us a focus.
"It would be a dream if it went down to seventh place but, for me, I think our chance has gone now."
