And our German midfielder has described the England international as having, alongside David Beckham, ‘the best right foot in the Premier League’.
Darren, recovering from Achilles surgery, signed a new, four-year deal before jetting off to Spain for pre-season training.
Speaking from our base in La Manga, Steffen commented: “It’s nice to know Darren has signed. It was important that both Darren and Les Ferdinand stayed at the club.
“It was hard to lose Sol but it is nice to have Les and Darren here and now we have Teddy, Gustavo and Goran at the club. Perhaps we might sign Christian Ziege as well. We will have a good squad.”
Steffen was in no doubt as to the influence a fully fit Darren could have on the team.
“Everyone knows if he is fit he is an important player for us,” he added. “Maybe, with David Beckham, he has the best right foot in the Premier League and for set-pieces, corner kicks and free-kicks he is a dangerous player.
“It was important to hold him because if he is fit fully and Stephen Carr is fully fit we will have a very strong right side.”
Steffen Freund insists that Darren Anderton’s decision to commit himself to the club is a timely boost after the loss of Sol Campbell.
