Two goals in two second half minutes for the Black Cats put paid to our chances of emerging from the North East with any reward and Steffen pondered that such a setback might provide the impetus to put our season back on the promising track it has travelled so far this campaign - particularly with Arsenal next on the horizon.
"Maybe it is good to come down so we can start again with a clean sheet of paper," he reasoned. "Everyone can play better and we have to come back.
"You don't need to be motivated to play against Arsenal. At the moment it is good to come a little bit down and realise that we can play better than that.
"We lost the game in two minutes. They scored the first after a second cross was headed in and it was really hard for the team when we went 2-0 before we had the chance to go down the other end.
"Maybe in the end we have to be honest. Sunderland scored two goals and, in the end, we didn't do enough to win the game. When teams go two up it is really hard to come back."
Steffen Freund was typically honest in his appraisal of our defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, reflecting that the team did not do enough to win the game.
