If, as is likely, Fredi's qualification to play for Mali is rubber-stamped later today we shall speak to Mali and Fredi in the hope that a compromise can be reached that will allow Fredi to play for us against Liverpool on January 17.
FIFA rules state that the call-up period for finals of major tournaments is 14 days.
A Club spokesman said: "We have written to FIFA asking them that if, as expected, Fredi gets the OK, we would appreciate their help in terms of relaxing that release period."
We received official notification from Mali requesting that Fredi join them on the 11th January, which means that he is clear to play for us at Leeds. Now we hope that Mali will delay his arrival until January 18.
The tournament in Tunisia sees Mali start their Group B challenge against Kenya on January 26. They then play Burkina Faso on the 30th and Senegal on February 2. The final takes place on February 14.
The Club has written to FIFA requesting the international association's assistance in delaying Fredi Kanoute's departure for the African Nations Cup.
