Dimitar Berbatov's wonderful volley handed us the lead we deserved at the start of the second half and we were thwarted a number of times by Mark Schwarzer before Middlesbrough hit back via Robert Huth's equaliser 10 minutes from time.
But we weren't to be denied on this occasion as Robbie Keane came off the bench to hammer home the winner from 25 yards.
"The support of the crowd was amazing," said Martin. "Normally you would be a bit worried because we were so disappointing against Arsenal.
"We wanted to show the fans that we wanted to do well for them and they were terrific again.
"There is a good mentality in this squad. We've won five home games on the trot and we broke records last season. We have a good team, we've got talent but it's not easy to do well all the time, the Arsenal game being one of them.
"But I can't recall many games when we were very poor and we deserved to win again, even if we almost punished ourselves at 1-1. Luckily, we've got that quality in Berbatov and Keane and we've said all along that our strikers can make the difference."
Martin Jol revealed that the lads were determined to win for the fans against Middlesbrough on Tuesday night after the defeat at Arsenal.
