Fond memories for Deano

Posted on 4 January 2003  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Dean Richards says he'll always have fond memories of Southampton - no matter how much stick he gets from the home fans again this weekend.

The big defender is relishing the prospect of part two of the big double-header against his, Glenn Hoddle and John Gorman's former club in what is a potential FA Cup cracker on Saturday night.

The trio were the target of the boo-boys in our Premiership clash on New Year's Day.

But Deano insisted: "I won't forget my time there and how good the fans were to me down there, no matter how much stick they give me.

"But things change, I moved on and they don't like that but I'll always look back on Southampton with fond memories."

Deano looked to have edged his personal battle with former team-mate and great friend James Beattie until the in-form striker bagged the only goal of Wednesday's affair.

It was a huge blow after we'd dominated the game and Deano admitted he could only see one winner.

He also shouldered the blame for Beattie's goal.

"It was frustrating because we all felt we were in control of the game, had a few chances that we didn't take and there was a point in the game that I couldn't see us losing it," he reflected.

"We seemed quite comfortable, they weren't causing us problems defensively and myself, Ledley and Chrissie were dealing with most things that were thrown at us.

"It was a good goal from James, he did well and sometimes you have to hold your hand up and say it was a good bit of play and finishing.

"I was disappointed because having looked at it again, I should have defended it better.

"I shouldn't have let him turn inside me because that opened the goal up for him. I should have kept him wide. I lost my bearings a little because I was worried about his right foot. Looking again, I didn't realise how wide he was.

"But for an away game, I thought we were spot on.

"They are quite a direct team, a physical team and I felt we matched that. Mid-way through the second half, I didn't think we could lose it. There only looked one winner and that was us. But goals change games and decide matches and that was the case."
