We travel to St James’ Park on Sunday, May 15, next year, having last faced the Magpies on the last day of a league season back in 1995-96.
With hosts Newcastle flying high in second place, they harboured hopes of leapfrogging league leaders Manchester United to take the title when we met on May 5, 1996, but that plan suffered a blow when we took the lead in the 57th minute through Jason Dozzell.
Les Ferdinand – who would join us a year later – levelled for the Magpies 19 minutes from time as the game ended 1-1, while United’s win at Middlesbrough saw the Red Devils maintain their place at the summit. We finished eighth on 61 points.
Darren Anderton is challenged by Newcastle's Darren Peacock on May 5, 1996.
We had two final day meetings with Newcastle in the mid-1970s, the first of which was in 1973-74 and yielded a 2-0 away win with Alan Gilzean scoring on his final appearance for us. Martin Chivers also netted.
Goalkeeper Terry Lee made his one and only senior appearance between the sticks for us in that May 11, 1974, clash while young defender Keith Osgood was also handed his senior debut when he went on as a substitute for Phil Beal.
Two seasons later, on April 24, 1976, we lost 3-0 at White Hart Lane with a Micky Burns goal and a Malcolm Macdonald brace giving Newcastle the points. Chivers made his final appearance for us prior to his move to Swiss side Servette, Chris Jones going on for the striker as a substitute.
