After a few days with his adoring fans back home in South Korea alongside Ben Davies, Kyle Walker and Kevin Wimmer, the quartet flew into Hong Kong to join up with the main squad on Thursday and 36 hours later, Sonny curled home a beauty to open the scoring in our friendly against Kitchee SC.
It was the perfect end to the week for the squad in Asia and for Sonny, the perfect finale to a campaign where he broke the 20-goal barrier in all competitions. Indeed, he was part of Club history as for the first time, we had three players (Sonny, Harry Kane and Dele Alli) all score 20-plus in one season.
But as Mauricio Pochettino was quick to point out, this was all about the fans.
“It was very good to see how the Asian fans support us,” said Sonny, who went his separate ways to join up with the South Korea squad for a World Cup qualifier in Qatar and friendly against Iraq.
“We were in Korea and had a really good time with so many fans and I’ve enjoyed Hong Kong as well, although I haven’t been here as long as the other players. I really enjoyed the game, played 75 minutes, scored - I’m the happiest guy tonight!
“It’s a great night, I was happy to score and I say ‘thanks’ to our Asian fans and Tottenham fans all over the world, thanks for your amazing support, that’s why we’re here and next season, we look to go forward again.”
